Topic 1: The Role of Evaluation in Supporting Transformative Leadership Development for Intra-Organizational Partnerships

Operationalizing the quality partnerships between organizations can be described according to four dimensions: partnership composition, organizational structure, operational guidelines, and qualities of the partnering relationships.  Partnerships can evolve across these dimensions, developing (or not developing) capacity for transformative action. In this session, the discussion will include an articulation of partnerships at the beginning, emerging, developing, and transformative stages of development as well as evaluation theory and tools to support organizational action to develop more productive partnerships. Finally, the conversation will conclude with the important role of leadership in supporting intra-organizational collaboration and how evaluation can be an important part of the capacity-building process.

Presenter: Elizabeth Oyer is the president of EvalSolutions Inc with experience in research and evaluation since 1995. Dr. Oyer began her career as a research specialist at the renowned National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago followed by the management of an NIH-funded experimental evaluation for school health and drug use prevention study at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her work related to partnerships began in earnest in 2007 as part of the state level evaluation for the DOE Mathematics and Science Partnership Program. Since then, she has worked in education, health and human services, non-profit, and mental health sectors providing evaluation and technical support around organizational collaboration. Dr. Oyer is the current chair of the Research on Evaluation SIG for AERA and the Cluster, MultiSite, MultiLevel Evaluation TIG for AEA.

Topic 2: Publishing Research on Evaluation Studies: Insights and Advice From Editors of the American Journal of Evaluation

This session will highlight advice and suggested strategies for successfully navigating the manuscript preparation, peer review, and revision processes when attempting to publish in the American Journal of Evaluation. Editors will address common challenges; share lessons learned as authors, editors, and reviewers; and answer participants' questions about what it takes to publish. This session is helpful to those who are in the midst of preparing a manuscript, graduate students thinking about publishing, and practitioners who have yet to be published and would like guidance.

Presenters:

Sharon Rallis, PhD, serves as the Dwight W. Allen Distinguished Professor of Education Policy and Reform at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Dr. Rallis is a former President of the American Evaluation Association (2005) and current Editor of the American Journal of Evaluation. She has published eight books on leadership and research methodology; two are in multiple editions and several have been translated into other languages. She has published extensively about evaluation in journals, handbooks, and edited volumes, including The Sage International Handbook on Educational Evaluation.

Anne T. Vo, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Clinical Medical Education at the Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California. Anne has edited and published in a number of leading journals in the evaluation field, including the American Journal of Evaluation, New Directions for Evaluation, and Evaluation and Program Planning. She has co-edited a special issue on use of logic models to empirically study evaluation theory and a volume on evaluation use and decision-making in society (published by Information Age Publication). In addition, Anne also serves as the Section Editor of AJE’s section on Teaching and Learning of Evaluation.
